Slipping into the car, Greyson secured his seat belt, then sat there for a moment, settling his thoughts.

“Greyson?” Concern tinged her voice. “Are the girls good?”

He nodded and started the car. “Yeah. Ms. Nichols was very welcoming. She said she’d talked to you last night and apologized for not being aware of the girls’ loss.” He hated that people were talking about them, but the guilt he felt over not being the one to make sure his daughters were okay was worse.

He should have been more proactive. But he was used to hiding everything. How did he balance the lies with the girls’ well-being? It would be easier to homeschool, but they loved school.

Moving to a small town was supposed to make things easier, but it had brought complications he hadn’t dreamed of. Now there was Savannah. He had to fight the urge to open up to her, to tell her everything. But he couldn’t risk it. The girls needed her, but he was going to keep his distance.

“I’m sorry. Did I overstep? We went to school together. She’s a great teacher. I thought if she knew the—”

“It’s okay. That helped them a lot. I’m a very private person and I just... I don’t like people knowing our business.” And he should have been the one to call the teacher. Turning to Savannah, he made sure to give her a reassuring smile before focusing on the road ahead. “You’ve helped in more ways than I can count or properly express appreciation for.”

“I didn’t really do anything.” She crossed her arms and leaned into the corner as she looked out the window.

Her body language screamed Don’t talk to me. He frowned. Had he upset her? Probably. “Savannah, what’s wrong? Did someone say something to you when we were inside the school?”

“No. I just want to get back to work. There’s a lot to do in the barns, and Reno has already been out there a couple of hours working alone. I’m tired. All this with the girls is just not normal for me.”

“I know. Like I said, I can’t thank you enough. You’ve gone way beyond the call of duty. That’s one of the reasons I wanted you to come with me this morning, so that we could have a chance to talk.”

He didn’t think it was possible, but she pulled tighter into herself. She looked so tense with her forehead pressed against the window. “I know you weren’t happy with your mother talking about us dating, but I thought about it. Neither one of us want to date, but it seems the favorite pastimes in Port Del Mar are gossiping and matchmaking. If we let people think we’re seeing each other, it solves a lot of problems. And it will seem natural for you to pick up the girls in an emergency.”

She shook her head. “You want me to lie to make your life easier. I can’t do it.” Her voice had a bitter edge to it.

“No. That’s not what.
